EPL: Diego Simeone to Chelsea in the summer a done deal?
The last thing most Chelsea fans
expected at the start of the campaign was a mid-season managerial change, with
the Blues being forced to look for a new long-term manager before the calendar
turned. Jose Mourinho was sacked, however, and with Guus Hiddink making it very
clear that he's only here until the end of the current campaign, the media has
been linking the London side with all sorts of potential replacements.
On Tuesday, Spanish website OK Diario is claiming that Chelsea fans might be getting one of the biggest names on their list, claiming that current Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has already informed his current employer that he's Chelsea bound this summer. The report states that Chelsea will meet th buyout in the Argentine's current contract, and that Simeone will more than double his current salary when he makes the move to England.
It's always worth noting
that anything from the Spanish media is worth questioning the accuracy of, and
especially so with some smaller outlets such as the one from this report.
That
said, it would make loads of sense for Simoene to be interested to a move to
one of Europe's mega-clubs, and with the influx of money and managerial talent
in England, as well as Atleti's impending transfer ban, the timing would seem
to be just about perfect, especially for someone who would seem ideally suited
to work with the sort of players the Blues currently have under contract.
Personally, I've greatly
enjoyed watching Atletico play throughout Simeone's tenure, and would be a big,
big fan of bringing him to Stamford Bridge. Here's hoping there's something to
this report...
