EPL: Manchester United opened talks with Jose Mourinho in the aftermath of their 2-1 defeat to FC Midtjylland,
United’s
humiliation in Denmark only served to increase the pressure on Louis van Gaal,
with many calling for his head as soon as the final whistle blew.
According to the
Mirror, United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was spurred into
contacting Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes by the result.
It’s claimed he
was trying to ascertain whether not the former Chelsea boss would be willing to
assume control at Old Trafford before the end of the season, having finally run
of patience with Van Gaal’s reign.
Mourinho’s
impending visit to the San Siro had sparked rumours he was set for a return to
management with former club Inter Milan, but he has since moved to rule that
out as an option.
‘I go for a day
in Milan to personally say thanks to my president Mister Moratti,’ he said.
‘It will be a
great emotion for me – San Siro and the Interisti – but let me make it clear… I
will not be Inter manager next season.’
United have
refrained from sacking Van Gaal despite a dreadful run of form, but defeat to
Shrewsbury in the FA Cup on Monday could prove terminal.
