According to ort, Anthony Joshua made a successful first defence of his IBF heavyweight title as he knocked out Dominic Breazeale in the seventh round.
The Londoner blitze d his American opponent
from the opening bell and landed several big shots in a dominant opening round.
It was more of the same in the second and
Breazeale was visibly hurt as Joshua landed a clubbing left hook that send the
30-year-old crashing into the ropes.
It looked as though it would just be a
matter of time before the finish came but the 30-year-old showed heart and chin
by repelling Joshua’s sustained attacks.
However, he could not keep the Briton off
for long and Joshua closed the show in a spectacular seventh round. He backed
Breazeale into a corner and floored him with a series of huge right hands.
Breazeale made it to his feet and was
allowed to continue but was down again moments later and this time Howard
Foster waved the fight off without bothering to count.
The
victory ensured Joshua maintained his perfect record and the 26-year-old has
now won all of his 17 fights by knockout.
It will also lead to even louder calls for
him to face Tyson Fury, who holds the WBO and WBA versions of the heavyweight
title and held the IBF strap before he was stripped for refused to face his mandatory
challenger in order to facilitate a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko.
London’s O2 Arena was once again packed to
the rafters and Joshua, who won gold at the London 2012 Olympics, received a
rapturous reception as he made his way to the ring to face the previously
undefeated Breazeale.
And the 17,000-capacity crowd were given
plenty to cheer about as the champion produced another spectacular performance
that showcased his power and development as a fighter.
George Groves outpointed Martin Murray on
the undercard to win the WBA International super middleweight title, while
Chris Eubank Jr knocked out Tom Doran to retain his British middleweight title.
