Olympic men’s soccer champion Mexico was bounced from the 2016 tournament
in the group stage after a 1-0 loss to South Korea Wednesday. Kwon
Chang-Hoon got the goal for Korea that sent Mexico crashing out.
The
defeat left Mexico on four points, in third place behind South
Korea and Germany in Group C. The Koreans won the group on seven points,
and the Germans finished second on five points.
Mexico
came into the game knowing it would likely need a win to advance,
essentially because it only beat Fiji 5-1. Korea, meanwhile, beat the
minnows from the Oceania Confederation 8-0 on the first matchday, and Germany
demolished them 10-0 on Wednesday. So even with a draw, Mexico would have gone
out on goal differential.
Mexico tied
Germany 2-2 in its opener — a game in which it held a 1-0 lead and then a 2-1
lead in the second half — then beat Fiji, but is now headed home.
The
Mexicans upset Brazil 2-1 in the final four years ago in London on two goals
from striker Oribe Peralta. At that tournament, they won their group ahead of
South Korea.
Peralta
was also included on a 2016 roster that was expected to compete for the
title. Another rising star, 21-year-old winger Hirving Lozano, was also
expected to star in Rio, but didn’t even start Wednesday’s game against Korea.
He came on as a second-half sub, and was sent off for a straight red card in
the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Mexico
isn’t the only pre-tournament favorite to be knocked out after three games.
Argentina drew 1-1 with Honduras earlier in the day, and finished in third
place in Group D, behind the Hondurans on goal difference.
Brazil,
meanwhile, has disappointed through two games, and needs a win over Denmark
later on Wednesday to ensure its tournament doesn’t end early too.
South Korea plays Honduras in the knockout round on
Saturday, while Germany plays Portugal
