PHOTO:Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp opens up on Liverpool’s defence and blamed himself for conceding 3 to Arsenal in the season opener
The game between Arsenal
and Liverpool ended with the Liverpool team going home the happier side, but
the Liverpool team conceding three goals and almost drawing the game, was a worry to the
fans and most especially the coach. Here is what the coach had to say about
that:
“We came out after half-time and scored wonderful goals,” Klopp
grinned. “Then I made a big mistake as I was involved in the celebrations.
"There was still
half an hour to go - I played a part in the excitement in the last 30 minutes.
It was hard work, but a brilliant win. A deserved win. We made mistakes
together and scored some wonderful, wonderful goals.”
“Scoring four is wonderful, conceding three is
the opposite,” he said.
And he was not just
talking about the back four.
Asked about Mane’s
full debut, Klopp said: “Mane was very good, but can do better. He can defend
better.”
“I was happy half-time
came but our mistakes were so big they were easy to speak about,” Klopp said.
His team-talk worked,
as Adam Lallana controlled Georginio Wijnaldum’s pass on his chest before
sliding home four minutes after the break.
Then Coutinho netted
his second when he diverted home Nathaniel Clyne’s low cross.
And Mane marked his
Reds debut with a ridiculous finish when he scorched between the Arsenal
centre-backs before firing a left-foot shot into the top corner after 63
minutes to put the visitors 4-1 up.
With the chaos
surrounding the fourth Liverpool goal – the strike also sparked fan protests
around the Arsenal dugout – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s deflected strike off
Dejan Lovren almost went unnoticed.
On this evidence,
Liverpool are stronger title contenders than last season’s runners-up.
“What does this say
about both teams prospects this season?” Klopp smiled. “No idea! If you
celebrate too early life always gives you a knock.”
