Sydney Sweeney Cosies Up Hollywood Stars At Variety Event After Being Given The Cold-Shoulder Over Her MAGA Views
Sydney Sweeney appeared to have fallen out of favour with her fellow stars due to the recent controversies she has faced, but it seems Sydney Sweeney may be back in with Hollywood's finest as she hugged and kissed celebrities, including Sharon Stone and Jamie Lee Curtis, at this year's Variety Power of Women: Los Angeles event on Wednesday, Daily Mail reports.
According to the report by Daily Mail, the Euphoria star, 28, left very little
to the imagination in a sparkly silver dress with a sheer bodice that put her
famous chest on display.
While posing for pictures on the carpet,
Sydney Sweeney was joined by Jamie, 66, who kissed her on the cheek and
embraced her.
Sydney Sweeney was also seen catching up with
Sharon, 67, inside the event, and sat next to Christy Martin during the
dinner.
She was later spotted flashing a big smile as she mingled with other
guests - a stark contrast to her appearance at this year's Emmy Awards.
Sydney
Sweeney and Sharon have been working on Euphoria Season 3 for several months
now, including after she faced controversy for featuring in an American Eagle
ad campaign in July.
The
actress was engulfed in a bizarre controversy after she appeared in an American
Eagle denim campaign that had the tagline: 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,'
with critics claiming the ad was pro-eugenics and supported far-Right politics.
Sharon
told Variety on the carpet at the event: 'It’s okay to use what mama gave you.
It’s really fine.
'It’s
hard to be hot, and I think we all know that. It’s really okay to use every bit
of hotness you have - right here, right now - and go for whatever that is.
Everybody has their own certain kind of hotness, their own certain thing, and
you’re supposed to go for that.
Because
who are you not to be beautiful? You know, who you are isn’t an accident.'
Sydney
appeared to have fallen out of favour with her fellow stars at the Emmys, with
the actress making a subdued appearance on the biggest night in television.
While
she took to the stage to present Owen Cooper with the Outstanding Supporting
Actor award, Sydney was not pictured mingling with any of the celebrities
backstage, nor was she seen at any of the afterparties.
With
Sydney once Hollywood's darling, questions have been raised over why her
involvement at the Emmys was so limited - with it suggested that it may have
something to do with the recent controversies she has faced.
The
Anyone But You star has been on shaky ground after a huge backlash over her
American Eagle denim campaign, which was branded 'Nazi propaganda' by critics.
It
has also been revealed that the blonde beauty is a registered member of the
Republican Party, which sparked a hugely divided response.
In
contrast, much of Sunday night's ceremony was taken up with woke celebrities
lambasting President Trump's policies.
Four
days after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, not one
reference was made about the proud Republican.
Yet
while celebrities remained silent on Kirk, many of Sunday's speeches were full
of references to contemporary political issues.
Hacks
star Hannah Einbinder, 30, used the end of her acceptance speech to spotlight
Palestine.
After
picking up the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, the
actress concluded her address saying: 'Finally, go birds, f**k ICE and free
Palestine - thank you!'
She
was one of the thousands of actors, directors and other film industry
professionals – including Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, Tilda Swinton and Olivia
Colman – who signed the Film Workers for Palestine pledge to boycott Israeli
film companies 'implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian
people'.
She
was asked backstage to elaborate on her pro-Palestine speech and decision to
sign the boycott pledge.
'I
feel like it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the
State of Israel, because our religion and our culture is such an important and
long-standing institution that is really separate to this sort of
ethno-nationalist state,' she told the press, reported Deadline.
'Boycotting
is an effective tool to create pressure on the powers that be to meet the
moment. The Film Workers for Palestine boycott does not boycott individuals, it
only boycotts institutions that are directly complicit in the genocide … I
think it's an important measure, so I was happy to be a part of it.'
Comic
actress Megan Stalter, 35, another breakout star from HBO's Hacks, had the
phrase 'Ceasefire!' written on her purse on the red carpet.
'It's
the most important to stick up for people and for peace,' she told Variety of
the political statement. 'We have to use our platforms.'
Megan
went on to pose the question: 'What's the point of being at these big events if
you're not going to use your privilege?'
Javier
Bardem was another one of the Hollywood celebrities to voice his support for
Palestine on Sunday's red carpet, referring to a pledge more than 1,800
entertainment industry workers have taken to boycott working with Israeli film
companies.
The
Oscar-winning actor, 56, who wore a black and white keffiyeh around his neck,
urged those watching to support the pro-Palestine movement in an interview with
Variety, after the pledge was put together earlier this month - just ahead of
the two-year anniversary of Hamas's October 7 massacre.
On
a politically charged night in Hollywood it would be amiss not to notice that
Republican Sydney is at the other end of the spectrum to her Hollywood co-stars
when it comes to their ideologies.
Recently,
the actress was engulfed in a bizarre controversy after she appeared in an
American Eagle denim campaign that had the tagline: 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great
Jeans,' with critics claiming the ad was pro-eugenics and supported far-Right
politics.
In
one ad, the Anyone But You actress could be seen buttoning a pair of denim blue
jeans while saying: 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often
determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My genes
are blue.'
Another
clip filmed the star wearing a denim jumpsuit with a plunging neckline on the
front as the camera panned down towards her chest.
'My
body's composition is determined by my genes,' she said, and then stopped to
add, 'Hey, eyes up here.' The camera then jumped back up to her face.
Some
social media users slammed the campaign and labelled it as 'Nazi propaganda'
while other fans branded the backlash as 'unhinged'.
It
seemed the backlash only had a positive effect on the brand's profits, as
figures published on Wednesday showed it has earned $1.28 billion since June.
Wall
Street responded after the bell, sending the clothing store's stock price up 25
per cent. The stock is still down 18 per cent on the year.
Experts
previously told the Daily Mail that the contentious ad was intentionally
attention-grabbing.
'From
a PR perspective, what we're seeing from Sydney Sweeney isn't a 'misstep','
Alexandria Hurley, a Las Vegas-based publicist, said.
'Sydney
has flirted with controversy before — from her SNL Hooters skit to her recent
Bathwater Bliss collaboration with Dr Squatch — and rather than walk it back
after criticism, she's leaned further in. That's not oversight. That's
strategy.'
However,
this strategy was no help when it came to ticket sales for Sydney's latest
movies, which were both released in August.
Ron
Howard's $50million-budget survival thriller Eden — debuted in 664 screens and
earned just $1million.
The
film's disappointing box office performance may be partly due to lukewarm
reviews, despite a star studded-cast.
Meanwhile,
her film Americana, made only $500,000 on its opening weekend against a
$9million budget, the weekend prior.
Last
month it was also revealed that Sydney was a member of the Republican Party of
Florida, according to public voter records viewed by the Daily Mail. She
registered in Monroe County, Florida in June 2024.
Buzzfeed
was first to report the news not long after one social media user on X uploaded
a now-viral post.
They
wrote, 'was about to make a whole YouTube video exploring sydney sweeney's
choices not defending her but going through her career context and i just found
out this lady is an actual registered member of the republican party as of
2024.'
Sydney
skirted around the issue of politics in 2022, after she posted snaps of her
mother's birthday party guests wearing MAGA-inspired hats.
She
told GQ: 'Honestly I feel like nothing I say can help the conversation. It's
been turning into a wildfire and nothing I can say will take it back to the
correct track.'
