Jaden Smith Mocked Over First Collection With Christian Louboutin
Hollywood nepo baby Jaden Smith has been ridiculed by fashion bloggers after debuting his first menswear collection for luxury fashion brand Christian Louboutin.
The actor and rapper, 27, who is the son of A-lister Will Smith and
his wife Jada, made history in September when he was appointed as Christian
Louboutin's first ever Creative Director for their men's division.
Jaden Smith finally unveiled the results of his debut collection
at Paris Fashion Week on
Wednesday, and the reception has been mixed to say the least.
Online fashion bloggers have had a field day
with the pieces, with many zeroing in on Jaden's fluffy red footwear, which has
been likened to Ronald McDonald and Elmo.
'What are we doing? I'm genuinely pissed off
because I was rooting for him so hard,' said style influencer Kevin Shephard.
'This man took the opportunity of a lifetime
at Christian Louboutin and fumbled it,' he added.
Fashion commentator Carlysle said on TikTok
that the faux-fur red boots, which cost $2,990, 'looked like someone
skinned Elmo alive', and that one of the furry statement belts looked like
'pubes coming down'.
Art and design commentator Anjela Freyja said
on TikTok, 'I have to be honest, it's feeling a bit redundant, probably because
he's so young.'
She continued, 'He hasn't really established
his own design ideas yet. The red boots are cool, but it feels like design for
spectacle verses design for design, and that's very common for young designers
to do.'
In one particularly scathing assessment,
TikTok page I Went To The Art School said, 'We're watching a first-semester
student project being sold as high luxury just because of a famous last
name.'
Others online made fun of Jaden for showing
off a bulky $1990 'tactical vest' that he described as 'formal attire' that
could be worn to a wedding.
'I wouldn't wear that harness to the airport,
ok hun?' commented fashion columnist Stacey Duguid.
Despite the backlash, some fans and press
outlets were much more positive towards Jaden's latest creative endeavour.
Fashion influencer Jarrod Jenkins said on
TikTok, 'So far I actually like what I've seen', before calling Louboutin's new
Chelsea boots 'amazing'.
Jenkins then compared Jaden's designs to the
late legendary designer Virgil Abloh, who was famous for pioneering the luxury
streetwear trend.
Meanwhile GQ Australia penned
a gushing review on Jaden's new line, writing that the collection is 'actually
good' and that the footwear is 'great'.
Fashion Network also
heaped praise on Jaden Smith, writing that the young star 'has the chops,
talent, and grace to be very effective' as the brand's Creative Director.
Daily Mail has contacted Jaden and Christian
Louboutin for comment.
Jaden Smith was joined at Paris Fashion Week
by his mother Jada, 54, and father Will, 57, this week.
The actor-turned-designer raised eyebrows by arriving to his Louboutin
showing with his face painted red – which may have been a
nod to the brand's iconic red-bottom shoes.
He also wore a black wool coat over a double
denim ensemble, which he layered with his own tactical vest.
Jaden Smith exploded onto the entertainment
scene as a child with a major role in his father's 2006 drama The Pursuit
of Happyness, which earned Will a Best Actor nomination at the Academy
Awards.
In 2008, he starred in the sci-fi
blockbuster The Day the Earth Stood Still with Keanu Reeves, before
headlining The Karate Kid remake in 2010 with Jackie Chan.
He teamed up with his dad yet again for
2013's After Earth, before starring in Netflix's musical series The Get
Down.
Jaden also released three rap albums and went
on tour with chart-topping superstars like Justin Bieber, Post Malone, and Kid
Cudi.
Last year, Jaden became Christian
Louboutin's first-ever Creative Director for their men's division.
The luxury fashion brand wrote in an
Instagram post at the time, 'As Christian Louboutin's first Men's Creative
Director, Jaden Smith will oversee the creation of four collections annually,
shaping a distinctive visual and emotional universe that extends beyond product
design.'
Jaden added, 'Merging my vision with
Christian's comes quite naturally because we see the world in a very similar
way.
'There's a shared respect for creative
freedom, and I think that's why it works. I want to continue the story,
honoring the past while shaping the future through my own perspective. It isn't
just a title - it's a creative home,' he continued.
'Christian has given me a place to explore,
to learn, and to create freely. His legacy is built on hard work and joy, and I
want to carry that forward.'
Explaining his debut collection this week,
Jaden said, 'This collection is inspired by the history of working men
throughout the centuries.'
He continued, 'The stonemasons, the scribes,
the doctors. It’s inspired by the lost epochs of time and made by hands born
from stars, forged under immense pressure deep in cosmic space.'
